COVID-19 Module (Updated 2021)

In partnership with the National Council for Social Studies (NCSS), the World History Digital Education Foundation offers below a set of free resources for Social Studies teachers to address the current COVID-19 pandemic. The Learning Module is composed of 3 days:

  • Day 1: historical comparison to the Influenza Pandemic of 1918
  • Day 2: geographic analysis of diffusion and population pyramid analyses of several countries
  • Day 3: examining globalization and government responses to the crisis

These days have been designed to be taught via distance learning or in person. There are student files that can be pushed out to students in a virtual learning setting. Content for these modules were updated May 2021.

Day 1: Comparison with the Influenza Pandemic of 1918

Students will investigate primary and secondary sources on the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 and the Influenza pandemic of 1918. Students will identify similarities and differences between government responses, geographic diffusion, cultural impact, economic impact, public reaction, and the effects of the diseases themselves.

Students will investigate sources on the diffusion of COVID-19 and also analyze population pyramids for five countries impacted by COVID-19.

Day 3: Globalization and Economic Impact

Students will analyze globalization through global economic data on the crisis as well as the growth of COVID-19 cases in Italy, South Korea, and the United States including government responses.
